Microneedling

Therapy

About
  • What it is?

Microneedling involves passing a device with tiny, sterile needles over the skin to create precise, superficial micro‑injuries. These micro‑channels signal the skin to begin a repair process, which may support smoother, more even‑looking skin over time. The procedure is performed in a controlled clinical setting using single‑use, sterile tips.

  • Potential benefits

    • Soften the appearance of fine lines and early wrinkles

    • Improve the look of mild acne scarring or textural irregularities

    • Support a more even‑looking skin tone

    • Refresh dull‑appearing skin

Results are gradual and typically develop over a series of sessions. No specific outcome can be guaranteed.

  • Concerns it may be suitable for

Microneedling may be discussed as an option for:

    • Mild acne scarring (once active acne is controlled)

    • Early signs of photoageing, such as fine lines and uneven texture

    • Certain types of pigmentation concerns, depending on cause and skin type

    • General skin quality concerns, such as dullness or roughness

Suitability depends on your skin type, medical history and current treatments. A face‑to‑face assessment is essential before deciding if this procedure is appropriate for you.

  • What happens during treatment?

    • Your skin is cleansed and assessed.

    • A topical numbing cream may be applied to support comfort.

    • The microneedling device is passed evenly over the treatment area at a depth selected for your skin.

    • A soothing serum or mask may be applied afterwards.

You may feel a scratching or prickling sensation during the procedure. Treatment time varies with the area treated but is usually around 30–45 minutes once preparation is complete.

  • Preparation

Before microneedling, you will usually be advised to:

    • Avoid active skincare (such as strong retinoids, acids or scrubs) for several days, as directed.

    • Avoid tanning and sunbeds.

    • Inform your doctor about any medical conditions, medications (including blood thinners), allergies or history of keloid scarring.

    • Mention any recent procedures (such as peels, laser or injectables) so timing can be planned safely.

Safety
  • Precautions

Microneedling is not suitable for everyone. It is generally avoided on active skin infections, open wounds, certain inflammatory skin conditions and in some other medical situations. Your doctor will discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

  • What to expect afterwards

After microneedling, it is common to notice redness and warmth, similar to mild sunburn, mild swelling or tightness, and temporary sensitivity to skincare products. These effects usually settle over a few days.

Most people can return to light daily activities soon after treatment, but you may prefer to avoid important social events for a few days while redness settles.

  • Common risks and side effects

Potential risks include prolonged redness or swelling, bruising, pinpoint bleeding, pigment changes, and flare‑ups of underlying skin conditions. Your doctor will discuss specific risks.

  • When to seek urgent medical review

Contact a doctor if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, discharge, blistering, or sudden changes in vision. If unsure, it is safer to ask for advice.

FAQs
  • FAQs

    Am I suitable for microneedling?
Suitability depends on your skin type, concerns, medical history and current treatments. A consultation with a qualified doctor is needed to decide whether this procedure is suitable for you.

    Does microneedling hurt?
Most people describe a scratching or prickling sensation. A topical numbing cream is often used to support comfort, but some sensitivity is still expected.
  • How much downtime should I expect?
Redness, warmth and mild swelling are common for the first 24–72 hours. Many people feel comfortable returning to work or light activities within a day or two, but you may prefer to avoid important events until your skin settles.

How many sessions will I need and when might I see results?
Microneedling is usually performed as a course of treatments rather than a single session. No specific result or timeline can be guaranteed, and your plan will be tailored after assessment.

  • Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Microneedling may sometimes be combined with other aesthetic treatments, but timing and combinations need to be planned carefully to protect skin health.
